Joann is shutting down the last of its stores by May 30, but as the craft chain closes its doors, scammers are rushing in to take advantage.
The Federal Trade Commission and Better Business Bureau have issued warnings about fake websites targeting shoppers with bogus liquidation deals.
Joann closures: What’s happening
The national fabric and craft chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice in one year, and announced in February that all stores would close.
Key details:
- More than 440 locations are shutting down this week
- Online sales ended March 5
- Remaining stores are offering 70-90% off in-store
- Furniture, fixtures, and equipment are also being sold off
Scam alert: Fake Joann websites
As Joann locations wind down, fraudulent sites are offering deep discounts on popular craft items—but they’re not real.
According to the FTC and BBB:
- Scammers use Joann’s branding and product images to create convincing fake websites
- Ads often appear on social media, linking to these false sites
- After enticing buyers with low prices and fake coupons, they harvest payment info or fail to ship items
Joann has made it clear:
“There are no other authorized Joann shopping websites.”
Shoppers are urged to avoid clicking ads and instead visit local stores to take part in the official clearance sales.
How to protect yourself from Joann-related scams
The FTC and BBB advise consumers to:
- Avoid “too good to be true” deals online
- Verify website URLs before buying
- Shop only in person at verified locations
- Use credit cards for better fraud protection
- Report scams to the FTC and BBB Scam Tracker
