A car that plunged into Cayuga Lake in the Town of Varick over the weekend did so intentionally, according to the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred on May 25 and resulted in the death of the driver, whose identity is being withheld out of respect for the family.
First responders from local fire departments attempted to rescue the individual shortly after the vehicle entered the lake but were hindered by the cold water temperatures and depth. Despite their efforts, they were unable to reach the driver in time.
Seneca County Sheriff Timothy Thompson expressed gratitude to all first responders and community members who assisted during the emergency. “The Sheriff would like to thank all First Responders and witnesses who assisted during this tragic incident,” the department stated in its update.
Authorities emphasized the importance of seeking help during times of crisis and encouraged those in need to reach out. Individuals experiencing emotional distress are urged to call 911, contact Finger Lakes Lifeline by dialing 2-1-1, or use the National Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to 741-741.
