The New York Mets (33-21) pulled off a thrilling 2-1 walk-off win over the Chicago White Sox (17-37) on Monday afternoon at Citi Field, notching their fifth walk-off victory of the season.
Clay Holmes gave the Mets another solid outing, working around early traffic and holding the White Sox to just one run over 5.2 innings. He got a huge assist from Pete Alonso, who made two key diving stops, including one in the first inning to keep Chicago off the board. Holmes was lifted in the sixth with the bases loaded, but José Butto entered and slammed the door to keep it a 1-0 game.
The Mets struggled early against former teammate Adrian Houser, who looked sharp in his return to Citi Field. Houser blanked the Mets through six, allowing just two baserunners and striking out six. But in the seventh, Juan Soto and Alonso reached to spark a rally, though Jeff McNeil struck out with the bases loaded to end the threat.
New York finally broke through in the eighth. Singles by Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Alvarez set up Soto, who delivered a game-tying sac fly. The Mets had another chance to take the lead, but Brett Baty’s fly out left the game knotted at one.
Edwin DÃaz was electric in the ninth, striking out the side. In the bottom half, Tyrone Taylor doubled, two walks followed, and Francisco Lindor launched a deep sac fly to right, sealing the walk-off.
Game 2 of the series is set for Tuesday at 7:10 p.m., with Tylor Megill set to take the mound for New York.
