On a rain-soaked Friday night at Citi Field, the New York Mets (30-21) showed fight but ultimately fell short, dropping a 7-5 heartbreaker to the Los Angeles Dodgers (32-19) in 13 innings despite a dramatic ninth-inning rally.
Trailing by three in the ninth, the Mets sparked life into the crowd when Starling Marte and Pete Alonso reached base to start the inning. Jeff McNeil delivered a clutch two-run triple, and Tyrone Taylor followed with a game-tying single off Dodgers closer Tanner Scott, forcing extras.
Edwin Díaz worked a Houdini act in the 10th, escaping a bases-loaded, no-out jam with a force at home and a double play. However, New York couldn’t push across a run in their half, stranding runners at second and third. More missed chances followed in the 11th and 12th, with Luis Torrens grounding into a crucial double play to end one of them.
After stellar relief work by Reed Garrett, the Dodgers finally broke through in the 13th off Huascar Brazoban with a Teoscar Hernández double and a Hyeseong Kim RBI single, sealing the win for Los Angeles.
Brett Baty put the Mets on the board with a solo home run in the third, and Alonso added a sacrifice fly in the fourth thanks to an obstruction call on Max Muncy.
The Mets look to even the series on Saturday when David Peterson faces Tony Gonsolin at 7:15 p.m.
