Tompkins County has launched a regional plan to fix its most dangerous roads, unlocking access to millions in federal funding, according to Tompkins Weekly.
The Safe Streets Tompkins initiative identifies 21 high-risk roadways using crash data and community feedback. The plan, backed by 10 municipalities, sets the stage for grant applications through the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All program.
Officials aim to eliminate fatal crashes by 2040 under a Vision Zero framework. Rural roads, which account for most deadly accidents despite fewer total crashes, are a major focus of the long-term safety strategy.
