The New York Mets (30-20) finally broke through Wednesday night, defeating the Boston Red Sox (25-26) 5-1 at Fenway Park to avoid a sweep and halt their season-long three-game losing streak.
Francisco Lindor set the tone early with a leadoff double, though New York’s struggles with runners in scoring position initially continued. After leaving several on base in the first two innings, Brett Baty delivered a clutch RBI single in the second to open the scoring. Luis Torrens was thrown out at the plate trying to score a second run, but Baty’s hit was a much-needed spark.
The offense truly came alive in the seventh. With the bases loaded and no outs, Baty struck again, driving a two-run single to left. Lindor reached on a fielder’s choice to keep the pressure on, and Juan Soto followed with a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 4-1. Lindor capped off the night with a solo homer in the ninth, his 10th of the season and the Mets’ first home run in over 200 at-bats.
Tylor Megill was sharp in his first career start in Boston, striking out 10 over 4.2 innings while allowing just one run. Huascar Brazoban escaped a bases-loaded jam in relief and tossed 2.1 dominant innings, dropping his ERA to 0.90. Reed Garrett and Edwin Díaz closed the door, combining with the rest of the staff to strike out 16 batters.
After a day off Thursday, the Mets return home Friday to open a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
