Cayuga County lawmakers are weighing a temporary hiring freeze to address worsening budget conditions, according to The Citizen.
Legislator Elane Daly has proposed a three-month pause on filling most vacant positions, starting June 1. The freeze would exclude key roles in public safety and social services to preserve critical operations. Rising costs and state mandates have weakened the county’s fund balance, forcing officials to consider cost-cutting moves.
The county has faced mounting financial pressure since approving a 2024 budget that tapped over $7 million in reserves. The 2025 plan further increased spending while cutting staff. Lawmakers are also considering a public hearing on overriding the state property tax cap next year.
