A deadly outbreak of tornadoes and storms swept across Kentucky, Missouri, and Virginia on May 16, killing at least 32 people and injuring dozens more, according to authorities. Kentucky was hit hardest with 23 confirmed dead, including a firefighter. Officials warned the death toll may rise as rescue operations continue.
The storm system destroyed hundreds of homes, left over 70,000 without power, and spawned tornadoes in several other states, including Indiana and New Jersey. One twister near St. Louis reached EF3 strength with 150 mph winds, damaging thousands of buildings and killing five.
Survivors described terrifying moments as homes crumbled and debris flew. Officials praised first responders and volunteers while continuing search and recovery efforts across devastated communities.
