Warner Bros. Discovery announced Wednesday that its flagship streaming service Max will officially return to the HBO Max brand this summer. The move marks a strategic pivot back to the platform’s prestige entertainment roots.
Why Max is becoming HBO Max again
The rebrand, revealed during the company’s 2025 Upfront presentation in New York, comes as Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) celebrates a major turnaround in its streaming division. Over the past year, the service has added 22 million global subscribers and reversed nearly $3 billion in losses over two years.
Executives say the return of the HBO Max name reflects a sharpened focus on premium programming — including HBO originals, box-office movies, documentaries, and select reality content.
“It just hits different”
Streaming CEO JB Perrette described the shift as a return to quality over quantity.
“We will continue to focus on what makes us unique – not everything for everyone, but something distinct and great,” Perrette said.
Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, added that the name change better aligns with consumer expectations.
“HBO Max far better represents our current proposition,” Bloys said. “It clearly states our promise to deliver content that is worth paying for.”
The power of the HBO brand
WBD President and CEO David Zaslav called the rebrand a recognition of HBO’s legacy as the gold standard in storytelling.
“No brand has done that better and more consistently over 50+ years than HBO,” Zaslav said. “We’re bringing back the name that signals quality.”
The HBO name had been removed from the service in 2023, when Warner Bros. Discovery first merged HBO Max with Discovery+ content under the simplified name Max.
However, the company now believes “HBO Max” carries stronger brand equity and better communicates the service’s core value: prestige content that stands apart in an increasingly crowded streaming market.
What subscribers can expect
HBO Max will continue offering a curated mix of:
- Award-winning HBO shows
- Warner Bros. blockbusters
- Max Originals
- DC Universe content
- Adult animation
- Live sports and news (in select markets)
Popular series like Succession, The Last of Us, Euphoria, Friends, and The Big Bang Theory will remain available, alongside growing franchises such as Harry Potter and A24 Films.
When is the name change happening?
Warner Bros. Discovery said the change will roll out sometime this summer, though an exact date was not provided. Users can expect updated branding across apps, platforms, and devices.
No disruption to service or subscriptions is expected during the transition.
