A racial hate symbol found etched in a Geneva pedestrian tunnel has sparked a police investigation and public appeal for tips.
On Wednesday at approximately 12:45 p.m., Geneva Police Department officers responded to a “suspicious condition” complaint at the city’s lakefront tunnel. According to the department, officers found the letters “KKK” drawn in pencil on the tunnel wall. The etching measured roughly five inches in height.
Photographs of the graffiti were taken, and the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office was immediately notified for further guidance. Geneva Police emphasized their intent to identify the individual or individuals responsible.
“The Geneva Police Department and the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office take bias-related incidents very seriously and will make every effort to identify the suspect(s),” the department stated in a press release.
Authorities are urging residents to report “anything unusual and/or out of the ordinary that could be perceived as hateful or inappropriate.” Anyone with information is asked to contact the Geneva Police Department or Lt. John Van Savage. The department noted that all tips can remain anonymous.
