Rapper Tory Lanez is recovering in the hospital after a violent stabbing Monday morning at California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, where he is serving a 10-year sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion.
Attack details and injuries
At approximately 7:20 a.m. on May 12, 2025, another inmate attacked Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, inside a housing unit at the prison. Responding staff administered emergency aid, contacted 911, and transported him to an outside hospital for further treatment.
According to a post on his verified Instagram account, Lanez sustained 14 stab wounds:
- Seven to his back
- Four to his torso
- Two to the back of his head
- One to his face
The injuries also caused both of his lungs to collapse, requiring a breathing machine. However, Lanez is now breathing on his own, speaking clearly, and expressing gratitude for his recovery.
Investigation underway
Authorities have launched multiple investigations into the incident. The prison’s Investigative Services Unit and the Kern County District Attorney’s Office are both examining the case. Additionally, the Office of the Inspector General received a formal notification.
Although no suspect or motive has been publicly confirmed, officials emphasized that the probe is ongoing.
Lanez’s attorney, Crystal Morgan, confirmed the attack and said she immediately notified his family. However, she also noted that she has not received updated information about his condition and remains concerned.
Legal background
Lanez is serving a sentence for shooting hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion—legal name Megan Pete—in July 2020. A jury convicted him in December 2022 on three felony charges:
- Assault with a semi-automatic firearm
- Carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle
- Discharging a firearm with gross negligence
During the trial, Megan testified that Lanez fired at her feet while yelling for her to “dance.” Bullet fragments had to be surgically removed from both feet.
Lanez has repeatedly claimed innocence. Despite those claims, a judge denied his request for bond in 2023 as he pursues an appeal.
Megan’s response and public reaction
At the sentencing hearing, Megan delivered a powerful impact statement, saying:
“He not only shot me, he made a mockery of my trauma. He tried to position himself as a victim and set out to destroy my character and my soul.”
Her words resonated across the hip-hop community and beyond. The case has sparked broader discussions about misogyny, victim shaming, and the treatment of Black women in the justice system.
What happens next
Lanez remains under medical supervision as the investigation continues. Although prison officials have not released further updates, fans and supporters are closely watching for developments.
This attack adds a new chapter to a case that has already made national headlines and continues to stir debate within the music industry and public discourse.
