Driver injured in Modified race car crash at Canandaigua track

A high-speed crash at the Ontario County Fairgrounds and Racetrack left a Rochester man hospitalized after his race car rolled over on the track.

Deputies identified the driver as 53-year-old Gilbert F. Tegg Jr., who was injured in the May 10 crash around 10:02 p.m.

According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, Tegg Jr. was entering turn 3 when his Modified race car struck an orange protective barrier head-on. The impact caused the vehicle to flip end over end twice.

Emergency crews from Canandaigua Fire and EMS responded to the scene and extricated Tegg Jr. from the wreck. He was transported by ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester with back and neck injuries and possible broken bones.

Officials later corrected an earlier report, noting that the vehicle was a Modified race car, not a Sprint car. The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
