How the SSA tracks baby names
The SSA has compiled baby name data since 1997, using information from Social Security card applications. Parents typically apply for their child’s Social Security number during their hospital stay, making SSA the official source for baby name rankings in the U.S.
Why baby names matter
“Growing up with a working mom, I witnessed firsthand the dedication it takes to balance family and career,” said Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano. “This annual list celebrates that special connection, especially around Mother’s Day.”
In addition to cultural significance, names are tied to legal identity. A child’s Social Security number is essential for taxes, health coverage, and future benefits.
