  • Staff Report

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office celebrated major milestones and outlined critical public safety initiatives in its May 2025 newsletter.

Sheriff Jim Allard announced that the agency hired eight former New York State Correction Officers and swore in seventeen new full-time and part-time Correction Officers last month. In appreciation of staff, Sheriff Allard and Captain Mills hosted an employee luncheon where they personally made 60 pizzas for their team. The Office also received reaccreditation awards for both its jail and civil divisions during a visit from Peter Kehoe, Executive Director of the New York State Sheriff’s Association.

On Friday, May 16, the Sheriff’s Office will host the 10th annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service at its headquarters in Bath, New York. The event will honor fallen officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and is open to the public, elected officials, veterans, students, and first responders.

April was also a month of significant operational reviews and training. The Sheriff’s Office completed a staffing analysis for its Patrol Division, highlighting response time challenges and geographic coverage issues compared to similar counties. A four-year plan was proposed to expand coverage while remaining budget-conscious, and the proposal was positively received by county legislators.

Deputies and correction officers completed a wide range of specialized training, including the NYS Boater’s Safety Course, Initial Pistol Course for Peace Officers, SWAT Operator Course, Cellebrite phone evidence training, sniper training, and various instructor development courses. The Office also hosted community outreach events like a child safety seat check in Addison, a drug takeback event, and a safe driving education program at Canisteo-Greenwood School.

April’s caseload remained intense, with investigators handling cases involving burglary, robbery, child endangerment, assault, terroristic threats, food stamp misuse, sex offenses, narcotics, and more. Deputies responded to numerous domestic incidents, mental health detainments, emergency medical calls, and impaired driving arrests. Sheriff Allard noted that the Office received multiple public commendations for deputies’ professionalism and service.
