While there are no new federal stimulus payments scheduled for 2025, several states are stepping up with their own relief programs. In May, thousands of residents will receive new $600 stimulus checks to help offset the rising cost of living.
Here’s who qualifies and when payments are expected.
Which States Are Sending Stimulus Checks in May?
Two states have confirmed new direct payments this month:
- New Jersey: Through the expanded ANCHOR property tax relief program, New Jersey is sending $600 payments to senior renters and low- to moderate-income homeowners. Most payments are expected to be completed by the end of May 2025.
- New York: New York State officials have announced plans to launch a new inflation relief program later in 2025 aimed at helping low- and middle-income families manage rising costs. While exact payment amounts, eligibility guidelines, and rollout dates have not yet been finalized, leaders have indicated that the relief could come in the form of direct payments or expanded tax credits.
Therefore, if you live in either state and meet eligibility requirements, you could see a welcome boost to your bank account very soon.
Who Is Eligible for These Payments?
Eligibility varies slightly between programs, but common requirements include:
- Residency in the state for all or part of 2024
- Filing a state tax return (even if you owe no taxes)
- Income below $75,000 for individuals or $150,000 for married couples
- Specific conditions for renters, homeowners, or senior citizens (in New Jersey’s case)
In addition, individuals who received similar rebates last year are often automatically considered for the 2025 round, though it’s still important to double-check eligibility.
How to Check Your Payment Status
To check if you qualify or track your payment:
- New Jersey residents can check status through the New Jersey Division of Taxation portal.
Most payments will be sent automatically, but in rare cases, updated address or bank information may delay delivery.
Will Other States Offer Stimulus Payments?
Other states are considering localized relief, especially heading into the summer months when energy and food costs spike. Watch for announcements from places like California, Illinois, and New Mexico, where inflation relief programs are under review.
Meanwhile, the federal government has no plans for another national stimulus check in 2025.
