Americans should plan ahead as both FedEx and UPS will suspend most operations for 24 hours on Memorial Day, May 26, 2025. The shipping blackout will temporarily halt package pickups and deliveries across the country.
Shipping services paused nationwide
Both carriers announced they will close nearly all locations and halt services in observance of Memorial Day, a federally recognized holiday.
FedEx closures:
- FedEx Express and FedEx Freight will be fully paused.
- FedEx Office locations will operate on modified hours at select locations.
UPS closures:
- All UPS stores and pickup services will shut down.
- UPS Express Critical will remain available for urgent shipments; customers must call 1-800-714-8779 for access.
Without these services, consumers and businesses will be unable to send or receive packages until regular operations resume on Tuesday, May 27.
What about USPS and other retailers?
The U.S. Postal Service will also suspend regular mail delivery on Memorial Day. While some grocery and retail stores will remain open, others will close or adjust their hours:
- Costco will be closed nationwide.
- Natural Grocers will close all 168 of its locations.
- T.J. Maxx, Aldi, Sam’s Club, Target, and Kroger will operate on modified holiday hours.
Consumers are encouraged to check local store schedules before heading out, as hours may vary by location.
Why the Memorial Day shutdown matters
The Memorial Day shipping pause could disrupt personal and business deliveries, especially as many Americans order goods for summer activities.
Retailers often run major Memorial Day sales, but shipping delays should be expected for online purchases made over the holiday weekend.
As always, checking tracking information and making plans for critical deliveries in advance will help minimize disruptions.
