A welfare fraud investigation in Cayuga County led to the arrest of a woman accused of improperly receiving public benefits.
Marjorie Jones, 57, of Auburn, was arrested on April 28 on a warrant issued out of Auburn City Court. Investigators from the Cayuga County Department of Social Services, District Attorney’s Office, and Sheriff’s Office found that Jones allegedly failed to report household income, resulting in her receiving benefits she was not eligible for. Jones was charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree, welfare fraud in the fourth degree, and misuse of food stamps.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that welfare fraud remains a serious crime, and vowed continued collaboration with other agencies to prosecute offenders.
