An Auburn man was sentenced Thursday for attacking a woman in Sennett, according to the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office.
John Netti, 24, received a five-year determinate prison term followed by five years of post-release supervision. District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci announced the sentence, which was handed down by Judge Thomas G. Leone.
Netti pleaded guilty on February 20 to attempted murder in the second degree, a class B violent felony. The conviction stems from a February 2, 2024 incident when Netti approached a woman he did not know while she was walking her dog and put pressure around her neck from behind. The victim was able to break free, and deputies from the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office quickly apprehended Netti after he fled.
Authorities initially charged Netti with criminal obstruction of breathing, but the charges were upgraded following a Grand Jury review. Prior to entering his guilty plea, Netti was found competent by the court after a one-year stay at Marcy Correctional Facility.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Susan Azzarelli.
