Social Security May 2025 payment schedule: Key deposit dates

Two U.S. Social Security checks placed on a May 2025 calendar, symbolizing double payments for SSI recipients.

Millions of Americans are preparing to receive their Social Security checks this month. The Social Security Administration (SSA) will follow its standard birthday-based payment schedule throughout May 2025. Here is what retirees and beneficiaries need to know.

When will Social Security payments arrive in May 2025?

The SSA sends payments in four rounds each month, depending on when you were born. Here’s the full May 2025 deposit schedule:

  • May 3: If you started receiving benefits before May 1997.
  • May 8: Birthdays between the 1st and 10th of the month.
  • May 15: Birthdays between the 11th and 20th of the month.
  • May 22: Birthdays between the 21st and 31st of the month.

Most payments are issued through direct deposit. Those waiting for mailed checks may experience slight delays.

What is the average Social Security payment?

In 2025, the average monthly Social Security retirement benefit is about $1,720. However, the exact amount varies based on work history, retirement age, and whether you delayed benefits to maximize payments. The maximum monthly payment for someone retiring at age 70 is over $5,100.

Have COLA increases been included?

Yes. The 2025 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) has already been factored into monthly payments. There will be no additional COLA boosts midyear. The next COLA update will occur in October 2025 for 2026 benefits.

How to check your Social Security payment status

You can view your expected deposit date and payment amount through your mySocialSecurity account at ssa.gov. Setting up direct deposit ensures faster, safer receipt of benefits.

If your payment does not arrive on schedule, the SSA recommends waiting three mailing days before contacting them.
