Starting in early summer 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will roll out digital access to Social Security numbers (SSNs) through its secure online portal.

This new service aims to make it easier for individuals to retrieve their SSNs without needing a physical card.

How will digital SSN access work?

Individuals with an active mySocialSecurity account can log in and securely view their Social Security number. The feature will work on both computers and mobile devices, making it convenient to access your SSN anytime.

Lee Dudek, Acting Commissioner of the SSA, said the agency remains committed to providing better customer service while protecting personal information.

“We are proud to offer this new digital solution to our account holders,” Dudek said.

Who can use the digital SSN feature?

Anyone who sets up and verifies a mySocialSecurity account will be eligible. Creating an account requires providing personal information for identity verification.

Users who prefer traditional methods can still request a physical replacement card by mail or through an in-person visit.

Why is the SSA offering digital access?

The SSA wants to modernize its services and make them more efficient. Providing online access reduces the need for mailed documents and helps prevent lost or stolen cards.

Enhanced authentication methods, such as multi-factor authentication, protect sensitive information during online access.

This digital shift gives beneficiaries faster and safer options to manage their Social Security needs. Individuals are encouraged to set up a mySocialSecurity account to explore the agency’s expanded digital services.
