Georgia residents have only hours left to claim a one-time tax rebate worth up to $500. The rebate, part of Governor Brian Kemp’s latest relief package, aims to help families manage rising costs in 2025.
The payment will put money back into the hands of taxpayers who meet three basic eligibility requirements.
What is the $500 tax rebate?
The Georgia Department of Revenue is issuing a special one-time tax rebate to eligible taxpayers. The rebate is designed to return surplus tax revenue to residents and stimulate the local economy.
Governor Kemp emphasized that the rebate reflects the state’s strong financial health and his commitment to giving hard-working Georgians more control over their money.
In addition to the rebate, Georgia’s state income tax rate will drop to 5.19% this year and continue declining in 2026, providing long-term relief for residents.
Who qualifies for the $500 payment?
To qualify for the rebate, taxpayers must meet three criteria:
- Be a full-year Georgia resident in both 2023 and 2024.
- File a timely Georgia individual income tax return for 2023 and 2024.
- Submit the 2024 tax return by May 1, 2025.
Residents who file as single or married filing separately will receive up to $250.
Heads of Household will receive up to $375, and married couples filing jointly will receive up to $500.
Part-year and non-resident filers who meet filing requirements may also qualify for a proportional rebate based on taxable income.
Why this rebate matters
Georgia’s economy has outpaced national trends, and state officials believe taxpayers deserve a share of the budget surplus. Economic experts say these direct payments will help families meet essential expenses like rent, groceries, and utility bills.
Residents who have already filed their 2024 tax returns should automatically qualify for the rebate. Those still needing to file must do so immediately to avoid missing out.
