A $43 million class action settlement involving Progressive Insurance is now being paid out in 2025. Tens of thousands of current and former policyholders are eligible to receive checks or direct deposits after a legal dispute over underpaid total-loss vehicle claims. If you submitted a claim, here’s when you can expect payment and how to check your status.
What’s the Progressive settlement about?
The lawsuit alleged that Progressive failed to properly reimburse policyholders for sales tax and fees when their vehicles were declared total losses. Rather than go to trial, the company agreed to a nationwide class action settlement covering eligible claims between 2016 and 2022. Progressive denies wrongdoing but agreed to pay $43 million to resolve the case.
Who qualifies for a payment?
You may be eligible for a payout if:
- You had a Progressive policy covering total-loss vehicles between 2016 and 2022
- Your settlement didn’t fully include sales tax or registration fees
- You were notified by mail or email with a claim number
All valid claims had to be submitted by the court-approved deadline, which closed in early 2025. If you filed by then, you should be in line for a payment.
When are settlement checks being sent?
Checks and direct deposits are being distributed in batches beginning in late April 2025, with most expected to arrive by mid-May. The payment amount varies based on location and original settlement value but ranges from $100 to over $1,000 per claim.
Claimants who opted for paper checks should allow additional mailing time. If you opted for direct deposit, monitor your bank account over the coming weeks.
How to check your payment status
To track your payment, visit the official settlement website listed in your notice letter or contact the claims administrator directly. You will need your claim ID or confirmation number.
What to do if your address or bank info changed
If your mailing address or direct deposit details changed since filing your claim, contact the settlement administrator as soon as possible to update your information. Payments that bounce back due to incorrect info may be reissued, but delays are likely.
