New York is issuing inflation relief payments to eligible residents in 2025. These one-time checks aim to offset rising costs tied to food, rent, and utilities. Here’s what to know about eligibility, check amounts, and how to get yours.

Who is eligible for the 2025 inflation refund check?

The eligibility criteria for New York’s 2025 inflation checks are based on residency, income level, and prior tax filings. You may qualify if:

  • You were a full-year New York resident in 2024.
  • You filed a 2024 New York State personal income tax return.
  • Your adjusted gross income (AGI) falls below a specific threshold (typically under $75,000 for individuals or $150,000 for married couples filing jointly).
  • You claimed the Empire State Child Credit, Earned Income Credit, or STAR exemption on your return.

New York State uses your most recent tax return to determine eligibility. If your 2024 return has not been processed, you may not receive a check until it’s accepted.

How much will you receive?

Check amounts vary based on income and eligible credits claimed. Most payments range between $250 and $1,000. Families with dependents or who qualify for multiple credits may receive higher amounts.

The average inflation relief payment issued during previous rounds was about $425 per household.

When are the checks being sent?

Payments began rolling out in April 2025. New York State is sending checks in batches through both direct deposit and paper mail. The state has not published a fixed payment calendar but advises most recipients should receive their funds by the end of May.

Direct deposit will be used when banking information is available from your tax return. Others will receive paper checks at their mailing address on file.

How to check your status

You can check your eligibility or payment status by visiting the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance at tax.ny.gov. You’ll need your Social Security number and details from your most recent tax return.

You can also call the department directly at 518-457-5181 for individual assistance.

Are other states offering inflation relief?

While New York’s program is among the most active, a few other states have issued similar checks:

  • California: Sent out Middle Class Tax Refunds through 2023.
  • Colorado: Issued TABOR refund checks in early 2024.
  • New Mexico: Approved additional rebates tied to oil revenues.

However, most of these were one-time programs tied to state surpluses or cost-of-living spikes. New York’s 2025 effort is one of the few still in progress this year.
