A brief but intense lockdown was triggered Tuesday afternoon at Palmyra-Macedon Intermediate School after a report of a suspicious person in the area was traced to an off-duty officer engaged in a training exercise.
At approximately 12:57 p.m., Wayne County 9-1-1 received a call from a concerned citizen reporting an individual seen running while carrying a firearm and wearing tactical gear. In response, the school was immediately placed on lockdown.
Multiple law enforcement agencies — including New York State Police, the Town of Macedon Police, Village of Palmyra Police, and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office — responded to the scene. The district activated its District Wide Safety Plan, led by its Director of Safety and School Resource Officer.
Authorities quickly identified the individual as an off-duty law enforcement officer participating in a training activity. Despite the clarification, police conducted a full sweep of the school to confirm there was no threat present.
The lockdown was lifted shortly before 1:30 p.m., after law enforcement cleared the building.
“We take any and all situations like this seriously,” the Palmyra Macedon Central School District stated. “This procedure was in effect for the safety of all involved.”
The district expressed appreciation for the swift response by police and the understanding of families during the incident. “We’re grateful for our connection with local police, and for your patience and understanding as we navigated the situation,” the statement read.
“Safety remains a priority of the District.”
