Yankees late rally falls short in series-opening loss to Orioles (highlights)

The New York Yankees (17-12) couldn’t complete a late comeback Monday night, falling 4-3 to the Baltimore Orioles (11-17) in the series opener at Camden Yards.

Will Warren struggled, giving up four runs in 3.1 innings, including a three-run homer to Ryan O’Hearn. Defensive miscues didn’t help, as a dropped tag and misplayed fly ball cost New York extra bases. Warren still battled, striking out five and pounding the zone with first-pitch strikes.

Despite plenty of chances, the Yankees went just 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine men on base. Anthony Volpe, celebrating his 24th birthday, doubled in a run, while Austin Wells added an RBI double to make it a one-run game late. Aaron Judge collected two singles and drove in a run with a groundout but struck out against Orioles closer Felix Bautista with the tying run aboard in the ninth.

Ryan Yarbrough provided a big lift out of the bullpen, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings, while Devin Williams fired a clean eighth.

Box Score

The Yankees will hand the ball to Carlos Rodón on Tuesday as they look to return to the win column. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
