The Town of Canandaigua Highway Department has been honored with the 2024 Asphalt Showcase Award for its work on the Middle Cheshire Road Rehabilitation Project.
Highway Superintendent Jim Fletcher and his team were recognized by the Asphalt Pavement Promotion Committee for their leadership on the project, which improved a critical stretch connecting Routes 5 & 20 to residential communities along Canandaigua Lake.
The project, completed during the 2024 construction season, was a collaboration between the town, Villager Construction, Inc., and The Dolomite Group. It involved milling and resurfacing the roadway with 3,600 tons of 12.5mm Warm Mix asphalt, reinforced with polymer liquid and synthetic fibers. These advanced materials, approved by the New York State Department of Transportation, were selected to boost durability, resist rutting, and prevent surface cracking.
“This recognition is a direct reflection of the hard work and forward-thinking leadership of Jim Fletcher and our entire Highway Department,” said Town Supervisor Jared Simpson. “They continuously strive to improve the quality, safety, and longevity of our local infrastructure.”

Jim Fletcher praised the teamwork and innovation that defined the project. “We’re always looking to incorporate the most effective methods and materials available,” Fletcher said. “Our goal is not only to repair roads but to improve them in ways that serve our residents for years to come.”
In a formal statement, Fletcher highlighted the project’s broader impact: “This award highlights our commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability in infrastructure development. Completed by the Town of Canandaigua in partnership with Villager Construction and Dolomite Materials, the project showcased advanced engineering techniques, superior material selection, and meticulous craftsmanship to deliver a roadway that enhances safety, durability, and efficiency.”
The Town of Canandaigua applauded the achievement as a model of effective collaboration and innovation. A formal celebration to honor those involved is expected to be announced soon.
