What Happens If You Don’t Have a REAL ID After May 7?

The REAL ID enforcement date is May 7, 2025. Starting that day, the TSA will no longer accept non-compliant state-issued IDs for domestic air travel.

If you show up at an airport without a REAL ID or an approved alternative, here’s exactly what happens.

You Won’t Be Allowed Through Security

The TSA has confirmed: No REAL ID, no boarding pass.

Travelers attempting to fly with a standard (non-compliant) driver’s license will be turned away at security checkpoints unless they can provide another acceptable form of ID.

Accepted Alternatives to REAL ID

If you don’t have a REAL ID, these IDs are still valid for domestic flights:

  • Valid U.S. passport or passport card
  • U.S. military ID
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (e.g., Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI)
  • Permanent resident card
  • Tribal photo ID

What About Emergencies?

TSA agents have limited discretion in emergency situations, but no policy allows exceptions after May 7. If you forget your REAL ID and don’t have an alternate form of ID, you will not be allowed to fly.

Can You Fly With a Temporary License?

No. Paper or temporary licenses—even those issued during a REAL ID application—are not accepted by TSA unless accompanied by other valid documentation.

What If You Don’t Plan to Fly?

You may not need a REAL ID if:

  • You never fly
  • You don’t enter military bases or secure federal buildings
  • You have another compliant ID, such as a passport

But if your license expires soon or you’re planning future travel, applying now can save you time and hassle later.

Bottom Line

If you haven’t applied for a REAL ID yet and need to fly after May 7, 2025:

  • Make a DMV appointment immediately
  • Gather your documents
  • Get your compliant ID before your travel date

Failing to do so could result in missed flights and major delays.
