A Canandaigua man is facing charges after authorities say he falsely reported a dog as a stray in an attempt to surrender the animal.
Danni-Lynn Scott, 28, of Brookside Apartments, was arrested following an investigation by the Ontario County Humane Society. Officials said Scott called the agency on April 8 at about 11:18 a.m. to report a black and white dog running loose at his apartment complex. Scott claimed he secured the dog and did not know who the owner was.
Responding officers picked up the dog, a male Border Collie mix estimated to be between two and three years old, and transported him to the Humane Society shelter. Shortly after, a witness contacted authorities and reported that Scott had been caring for the dog, named Olaf, for several days. According to the witness, Scott could no longer keep Olaf because the dog did not get along with his cat.
Based on the new information, officials determined Scott knowingly misrepresented the situation. He was charged with falsely reporting an incident in the third degree and animal abandonment, both misdemeanors. Scott was issued an appearance ticket for Hopewell Town Court and released.
Olaf remains at the Ontario County Humane Society and will be placed for adoption once ready. The investigation was conducted jointly with the Ontario County Humane Society.
