A judge has delayed the opening of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office on Rikers Island, according to Politico, marking another setback for Mayor Eric Adams’ administration. Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Mary Rosado sided with the City Council’s lawsuit, which accuses Adams of cutting a deal with the Trump administration to dodge bribery charges.
The Adams administration argued the lawsuit was politically motivated as both Mayor Adams and Council Speaker Adrienne Adams campaign for re-election. City Council representatives said the ICE plan would erode immigrant trust and risk deportations for minor offenses, while Adams’ lawyers downplayed those fears as hypothetical.
First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro criticized the ruling but remained confident in the city’s legal position, stressing that ICE cooperation was essential for cracking down on violent gangs operating in New York.
