Schumer urges FAA to approve SUNY Schenectady ATC training program

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer is urging the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to approve SUNY Schenectady’s Aviation Science and Air Traffic Control program for entry into the Enhanced Air Traffic-Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI). The approval would help address the national shortage of air traffic controllers by creating a pipeline of highly trained students in Upstate New York.

“As aviation incidents increase, we must invest in the next generation of air traffic controllers,” said Senator Schumer. “SUNY Schenectady is ready and qualified to meet this demand, and now it’s time for the FAA to give final approval.”

Addressing a national crisis

Only about 70% of FAA air traffic controller positions were filled as of late 2023, with some major hubs operating at less than 60%. Schumer said approving SUNY Schenectady’s program is key to strengthening aviation safety and workforce readiness across the U.S.

A nationally recognized aviation program

SUNY Schenectady operates one of the most advanced community college ATC programs in the country, with a state-of-the-art simulator and a new $5 million Center for Aviation Sciences.

The program is housed at both the Schenectady County airport and the college’s main campus. It is already recognized across the SUNY system and beyond for its strong curriculum and real-world training environment.

“We are proud to train the next generation of air traffic controllers,” said SUNY Schenectady President Dr. Steady Moono. “We are ready to meet the FAA’s needs and provide students with exceptional training.”

FAA site visit expected soon

SUNY Schenectady is in the final stages of its application process and is preparing for a site visit by FAA officials. Once approved, the college would become part of a federal training initiative that expands access to high-paying aviation careers and reduces pressure on the national air traffic control system.

“This program is a proven success,” said Schenectady County Legislature Chair Gary Hughes. “A federal partnership would help local students enter a vital field while ensuring the safety of travelers nationwide.”
