Ontario County Clerk Jean Chrisman is reminding residents to come prepared if they plan to upgrade their driver’s licenses to a Federally acceptable Real ID or Enhanced ID before the upcoming deadline.
Beginning May 7, 2025, travelers will need a Real ID, Enhanced ID, or valid passport to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings. Chrisman’s message, shared by the Town of Canandaigua, urges individuals to bring all required documentation and a completed application when visiting the DMV.
While the mandate begins May 7, residents can still upgrade after that date if needed. However, Chrisman clarified that not everyone is required to upgrade. Those who do not fly or enter secure federal buildings may continue using a standard license. Individuals with an Enhanced license already meet the federal requirement and do not need to switch to a Real ID.
Additionally, a U.S. passport or military ID may be used alongside a license marked “Not for Federal Purposes” to meet federal security standards.
Due to the increase in Real ID applications, DMV wait times are longer than usual. Chrisman recommends reviewing Ontario County DMV operations online before visiting.
Residents are encouraged to spread the word and help others prepare for the change.
