For the first time since 2019, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is observing National Social Security Month, an annual April campaign aimed at helping Americans access their benefits. The Trump administration’s move to reinstate the campaign marks a renewed emphasis on customer service and benefit accessibility.

The campaign will run through August 14, coinciding with the 90th anniversary of the Social Security program.

A return to public outreach

The last observance of National Social Security Month took place during President Trump’s first term. The campaign was suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was not resumed under the Biden administration.

“President Trump has promised to protect Americans’ hard-earned Social Security benefits,” said Acting Commissioner Lee Dudek. “This campaign aligns SSA’s workforce with that promise—ensuring the agency serves the people through in-person, phone, and online access.”

SSA’s outreach campaign will include expanded efforts to help eligible individuals enroll, claim benefits, and understand their Social Security options.

Organizational changes and cost-cutting

The SSA is also implementing a broad organizational overhaul under the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). These changes include:

  • Ending DEI and gender-focused contracts
  • Returning telework employees to full-time in-office roles
  • Reassigning staff to front-line service positions
  • Streamlining agency bureaucracy

According to SSA, these measures are expected to generate more than $1 billion in cost savings. The agency is also continuing to modernize its IT systems to reduce delays and protect against fraud.

Focus on service delivery

SSA leadership said these reforms are intended to reverse the pandemic-era backlog of customer service complaints and long wait times that developed during extended remote work.

“Resuming National Social Security Month is part of a larger strategy to restore trust and performance in government service,” Dudek said.

Looking ahead

The agency says its renewed outreach effort will continue through the summer, building momentum toward Social Security’s 90th anniversary on August 14, 2025.
