Newfield eyes new flood law after 2015 disaster

A decade after devastating floods tore through Newfield, the town is preparing to pass a strengthened flood damage prevention law, according to reporting this week by The Tompkins Weekly. The move comes in response to updated flood zone maps from FEMA and the DEC, aiming to reduce future risks and secure access to disaster relief.

The proposed law, up for a public hearing on April 24, would regulate building in flood-prone areas like Fishkill Creek and Depot Road near Cayuga Lake. It also enables residents to qualify for FEMA aid—provided they carry flood insurance.

Town officials say the law will protect infrastructure, stabilize the tax base, and ensure safe development as Newfield prepares for future high-water events.
