Millions of Americans will receive Social Security checks in May, with payments following the standard distribution schedule used by the Social Security Administration (SSA). Here’s when to expect your payment and who is eligible.
Who gets paid on which dates in May?
The SSA pays benefits based on when you started receiving Social Security and your birth date. Here’s how the May 2025 payment calendar breaks down (here’s how April went):
- May 3 – Beneficiaries who began receiving payments before May 1997
- May 8 – Beneficiaries with birthdays between the 1st and 10th of the month
- May 15 – Birthdays between the 11th and 20th
- May 22 – Birthdays between the 21st and 31st
If your payment method is direct deposit, expect funds to hit your account on the exact date listed. Mailed checks may arrive a few days later.
How much will you receive?
Most retirees will receive an average check of around $1,720. However, payments vary based on your earnings history and retirement age:
- The maximum monthly benefit for someone retiring at age 70 in 2025 is $4,873
- Those who retire at full retirement age (67) can receive up to $3,822
- Retiring at age 62 lowers the max to $2,710
These amounts reflect the 2025 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), which was applied earlier this year and will remain consistent through December.
What if your check is late?
If your payment hasn’t arrived within three business days of the expected date, contact your bank first. Then reach out to the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or visit ssa.gov to report the issue or update your account.
Other May payments to know about
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients were paid on May 1. There is no second SSI payment scheduled in May.
Additionally, if you’re eligible for other federal benefits like SNAP or veterans compensation, check those program calendars for corresponding deposit dates.
