The village of Aurora is urging New York State to block Cargill from flooding an abandoned section of its Cayuga Salt Mine beneath Cayuga Lake, citing environmental risks, according to reporting by The Citizen.
The move comes despite a state declaration finding no significant environmental impact.
Aurora officials fear the storage of partially saturated brine below the lake could lead to groundwater contamination and question the mine’s structural stability. The village board has already passed a resolution calling for future permitting at the site to be denied.
State environmental officials maintain that the mine poses no threat, citing decades of studies and ongoing monitoring.
