Sen. Chuck Schumer warned Monday that President Trump’s sweeping tariffs could hit local restaurant businesses hard, according to Spectrum News 1. Visiting Syracuse for the National Cost of Living Week of Action, Schumer said the tariffs could cost families up to $5,000 more per year while also squeezing small businesses across New York.
Restaurant owners say the 10% baseline tariff and 145% tax on Chinese imports are raising prices on everything from ingredients to equipment. Some, like Emerald Cocktail Kitchen and 1812 Brewing Company, are already seeing disruptions, including losing access to foreign markets.
Schumer called the tariffs chaotic and harmful, pledging to force a Senate vote next week to repeal them. He said lawmakers have already introduced legislation to reverse Trump’s executive order.
