The federal enforcement deadline for REAL ID is set for May 7, 2025. After that date, you’ll need a REAL ID or equivalent to fly within the U.S. or enter certain federal facilities. Here’s how to get one before the cutoff.

Step 1: Confirm You Need a REAL ID

You need a REAL ID if you:

  • Fly domestically using a state-issued ID
  • Enter secure federal facilities, like military bases or nuclear sites

You do not need one to:

  • Vote
  • Receive Social Security
  • Access hospitals or receive federal benefits

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

To get a REAL ID, you must apply in person at your state’s DMV. Bring the following documents:

  • Proof of Identity: Valid passport or birth certificate
  • Social Security Number: Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub with full SSN
  • Proof of Residency (Two Documents): Utility bill, lease, mortgage, or bank statement

Note: Names must match across documents. Bring legal name change documentation if needed (e.g., marriage certificate).

Step 3: Schedule a DMV Appointment

Due to high demand ahead of the deadline, many DMVs are requiring appointments. Visit your state’s DMV website to book a time. Walk-ins may be limited or unavailable in some areas.

Step 4: Apply In Person

You must apply in person at your local DMV or licensing office. Online or mail renewals will not result in a REAL ID unless specified.

During your appointment:

  • Present all required documents
  • Take a new photo
  • Pay the fee (varies by state; typically $20–$60)

Step 5: Wait for Delivery

Most states will mail your REAL ID within 2–4 weeks. In some cases, you may receive a temporary paper license until the new card arrives.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

With the May 7 deadline rapidly approaching, DMV offices across the country are seeing increased traffic. Applying now ensures you’re not left grounded at the airport.
