The final deadline for REAL ID enforcement is approaching. Starting May 7, 2025, Americans must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another accepted form of identification to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities.
What Is a REAL ID?

The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 to enhance the security of state-issued identification following the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations. It sets strict federal standards for the issuance of driver’s licenses and identification cards.
A REAL ID-compliant license will have a star in the upper right corner. Non-compliant licenses will no longer be accepted for domestic air travel or access to secure federal buildings after the deadline.
Who Needs a REAL ID?
Any U.S. resident 18 or older who plans to:
- Fly domestically using a state-issued ID
- Visit military bases or secure federal facilities
You do not need a REAL ID to:
- Vote
- Drive
- Enter federal courts
- Apply for or receive federal benefits
What Are the Alternatives?
Other acceptable forms of identification include:
- U.S. passport
- Passport card
- Department of Homeland Security trusted traveler cards (e.g., Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI)
- U.S. military ID
How to Get a REAL ID
To apply, you must visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in person. Bring the following documents:
- Proof of identity (e.g., valid passport or birth certificate)
- Proof of Social Security number (e.g., SSN card, W-2 form)
- Two documents proving residency (e.g., utility bills, lease agreement)
Check your local DMV website for a complete list of accepted documents and to schedule an appointment.
State-by-State Progress
While most states are issuing REAL IDs, appointment availability may vary. Some states allow walk-ins, while others require pre-scheduled appointments due to high demand as the deadline nears.
To avoid delays, apply now. DMV offices are experiencing a surge in requests ahead of the May 7 cutoff.
What Happens If You Don’t Have One?
If you try to board a domestic flight without a REAL ID or equivalent form of ID starting May 7, TSA will deny you entry. Travelers will be turned away at security checkpoints unless they present a valid alternative.
