As cannabis celebrations take place across the country, Ontario County Public Health is reminding residents to use marijuana responsibly and be aware of the risks of THC overdose.
In a public safety message issued ahead of April 20, officials said that consuming too much THC—particularly in edibles—can cause serious and unpleasant side effects. The warning is especially important for young people, first-time users, and pets, who may be more vulnerable to the drug’s effects.
“Start low, go slow,” the department advised, encouraging users to begin with a small dose and give it time to take effect. Other safety tips include avoiding mixing THC with alcohol or other substances, knowing the potency of the product, and keeping all cannabis items safely stored away from children and animals.
Common symptoms of THC overdose can include anxiety, paranoia, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, panic attacks, rapid heart rate, or difficulty breathing. Officials stressed the importance of calling 911 or Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 if someone is experiencing a serious reaction.
“Be informed. Stay safe. Celebrate smart,” the department urged in the announcement.
