Tompkins County Jail is at full capacity for the first time in years, forcing officials to send inmates to other counties, according to the Ithaca Voice.
As of April 17, 69 inmates were held locally, with 13 boarded out—some due to housing needs, others awaiting state prison transfer.
Sheriff Derek Osborne said five inmates sentenced to state prison remain in county custody because the state paused transfers during a recent correction officer strike.
Despite overcrowding, Osborne said jail staffing is strong, thanks to recent hires.
