The U.S. Supreme Court temporarily blocked the deportation of Venezuelan detainees held in Texas under the Alien Enemies Act, according to a Saturday ruling. The Trump administration had begun targeting individuals it claimed were gang members, prompting emergency legal challenges.
The ACLU argued that detainees were denied due process and misled with English-language paperwork despite language barriers. Some were reportedly moved to Texas facilities to skirt prior court bans, and deportations to El Salvador were imminent.
Though lower courts declined to intervene, the Supreme Court ordered a pause. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented. Legal battles over the law, last used in World War II, are expected to continue rapidly.
