The U.S. Supreme Court has temporarily halted the Trump administration’s deportation of detained Venezuelans accused of gang ties, according to the BBC. The men, held in Texas, were being deported under a rarely used 18th-century law allowing removal of “enemy” nationals without court proceedings.
The Trump administration had sent over 130 Venezuelans to El Salvador’s notorious Cecot prison, invoking the Alien Enemies Act. The ACLU argued the detainees received notices only in English and were unaware of their right to challenge the deportation.
While the Court initially allowed deportations, it ruled that detainees must have the opportunity to contest them. A mistaken deportation in a high-profile case has fueled further scrutiny of the policy.
