Students Used Chewing Gum to Survive Shooting

Florida State University students resorted to chewing gum to seal classroom windows with paper during a mass shooting Thursday, according to NDTV. The creative tactic helped conceal them from a gunman who opened fire near campus, killing two and injuring five.

Jeffrey LaFray said the class used gum in place of tape to block the windows, trying to stay hidden as shots rang out. Meanwhile, graduate student Madison Askins survived by pretending to be dead after being shot, hoping the shooter wouldn’t return fire if she stayed still.

The accused gunman, 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, allegedly used a former service weapon belonging to his stepmother, a local deputy. He remains hospitalized after being shot by police during the attack.
