The White House Easter Egg Roll will go ahead Monday with 30,000 real eggs, according to Yahoo News, even as bird flu-related shortages have sent prices soaring. President Trump dismissed calls to use plastic eggs, insisting on keeping the tradition intact.
The American Egg Board, which donated the eggs, said the small and medium-sized ones used won’t impact consumer supply. Critics have raised ethical concerns over the event’s private sponsorships, some costing up to $200,000 for branding on the South Lawn.
The 147-year-old tradition dates back to 1878. Entry is free via lottery, and souvenir wooden eggs will still be given out.
