A gunman opened fire Thursday at Florida State University, killing two people and injuring six others before being wounded by police, according to campus authorities. The suspected shooter, 20-year-old student Phoenix Ikner, is the son of a local sheriff’s deputy and allegedly used his mother’s old service weapon.
The attack unfolded around noon at the student union, prompting a campus lockdown. Witnesses described chaos, with students fleeing or sheltering in place. Police say Ikner also carried a shotgun, which jammed before he switched to a handgun. He was shot by officers after refusing commands.
All classes and campus events were canceled. Officials are continuing to investigate as the FSU community grapples with another tragic shooting on campus.
