The Trump administration has ordered a sudden stop to construction on Empire Wind, a large offshore wind project meant to power over 500,000 New York homes, according to the Associated Press. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum claims the Biden administration fast-tracked approvals and called for further review of the project.
Empire Wind, developed by Equinor, began construction last year after receiving full federal clearance. The move is part of a broader rollback of renewable energy initiatives under Trump, who has also revoked permits for other wind projects. Equinor says it’s in talks with federal agencies to resolve the issue.
Industry groups warn the decision could chill investment and threaten energy goals. Labor unions argue the pause undermines job creation and energy stability amid rising living costs.
