Law enforcement agencies across Seneca County will join a statewide effort this weekend to curb impaired driving as part of the 4/20 Day STOP-DWI “High Visibility Engagement Campaign.”
The campaign, announced by Sheriff and STOP-DWI Coordinator Timothy J. Thompson, Jr., will run from Friday, April 18 through Sunday, April 20. The coordinated initiative aligns with the annual cannabis-related celebrations surrounding April 20, a date that has become associated with marijuana use and, too often, impaired driving incidents.
“4/20 Day has historically been a day for consuming marihuana and cannabis-related celebrations,” said Sheriff Thompson. “Unfortunately, it is also a day known for being a deadly period for impaired driving. We do not want to see you regret your decisions. Make good choices if you are getting behind the wheel.”
The campaign is part of a broader effort by STOP-DWI NY and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee to raise awareness and prevent accidents linked to impaired driving. It includes similar crackdowns on high-risk holidays such as Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Halloween, and the winter holiday season.
Through high-visibility patrols and public engagement, the campaign aims to reduce the number of crashes, injuries, and fatalities on New York roads. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead and avoid driving under the influence.
