The New York Mets (9-5) fell to the Athletics (6-9), 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at Sutter Health Park, despite a solid outing from David Peterson and a home run by Brandon Nimmo.
Peterson, returning after dealing with a stomach bug in his previous start, began strong by retiring the first six batters. He faced the minimum through three innings, helped by a pickoff and a diving stop from Brett Baty. However, trouble came the second time through the order. A leadoff double by Jacob Wilson in the fourth set up an RBI single from Tyler Soderstrom, and another run scored on a fielder’s choice. Peterson recovered to complete five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Offensively, the Mets struggled to solve former draft pick J.T. Ginn, who tossed 5.1 strong innings, giving up one run on a solo homer from Nimmo in the sixth. That blast was Nimmo’s fourth of the year and second in as many games. Aside from that, the Mets’ offense was stifled. Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso combined to go 0-for-9 with three walks.
Jose Butto surrendered an insurance run in the seventh, and the Mets couldn’t mount a comeback against Oakland’s hard-throwing bullpen.
The series wraps Sunday at 4:05 p.m. with Kodai Senga set to face Luis Severino.
