Schumer blasts Brown’s dismissal, calls Caine confirmation a test of independence

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer condemned the removal of General CQ Brown and voiced cautious support following the confirmation of General Dan Caine as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“I remain outraged about the decision to abruptly dismiss General CQ Brown in the middle of his tenure,” Schumer said Wednesday. “It’s clear Gen. Brown’s dismissal was purely political.”

The Senate confirmed Caine to the top military post earlier in the day. Schumer acknowledged Caine’s military record, citing his service in the Air Force and Air National Guard and his participation in multiple combat deployments.

“General Caine has served our nation with distinction,” Schumer said. “Now, as our nation’s top military advisor, I hope he will continue to fight for the needs of our servicemembers, speak truth to power, and resist Donald Trump when he’s wrong.”

Schumer’s remarks underscore lingering Democratic skepticism over the leadership change, as well as concerns about politicization at the highest levels of the military.
