A regional choir will offer a stirring performance of Lux Aeterna on Good Friday at St. Peter’s Church in Geneva.
The free concert, featuring the Mixed Choir of St. Peter’s Church and singers from across the area, will take place on April 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the church’s sanctuary at Genesee and Lewis Streets. The sanctuary is accessible, and donations to support the event are welcome.
The 30-voice choir, directed by Parish Musician MaryAnn Hamilton, DMA, will be accompanied by an instrumental ensemble including a string quartet, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, and organ.
Lux Aeterna was composed by Morten Lauridsen and first performed in Los Angeles in 1997. The work draws on texts from the Requiem mass and other Latin sources, written in response to the composer’s mother’s final illness. According to organizers, the piece offers “great comfort and solace,” reflecting on light as a symbol of spiritual and intellectual illumination.
The event is presented in partnership with St. Peter’s Community Arts Academy, which provides instruction and performances in music and dance for over 300 students from 16 schools in a five-county area. The academy is open to students of all ages and skill levels regardless of financial means or religious affiliation.
